Dental IV Sedation

Purpose

IV sedation is used to alleviate anxiety, fear, or discomfort in patients undergoing dental procedures. It is particularly beneficial for those with dental phobia, sensitive gag reflexes, or complex dental needs. 

Levels of Sedation

• Minimal Sedation: The patient is relaxed but awake.
• Moderate Sedation (also known as “conscious sedation”): The patient is drowsy and may not remember much of the procedure but can still respond to verbal commands. 

Procedure

• An IV line is started, usually in the hand or arm, and the sedative is administered.
• The dentist will adjusts the dosage as needed.
• Vital signs (such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels) are monitored throughout the procedure to ensure the patient’s safety.

Benefits

• Rapid onset of sedation.
• Adjustable levels of sedation for patient comfort.
• Often results in partial or complete amnesia of the procedure, reducing anxiety for future visits.
• Patients remain responsive to commands, which can aid in the smooth completion of the dental work.

Aftercare

• Patients must have someone to drive them home as the effects of the sedation can last for several hours.
• It is advised to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid making important decisions or operating machinery. 

Suitability

• Not everyone is a candidate for IV sedation. A thorough medical history and evaluation by the dentist is necessary to determine if it is appropriate.
• Patients with certain medical conditions or who are taking specific medications may require alternative sedation methods.
